Top Gay Family Cities: Madison
Wednesday, June 30, 2010 10:00:44 AM

Madison, Wisconsin consistently ranks as a top community to live, work, play and raise a family. The city occupies an enviable position along a narrow strip between lakes Mendoa and Monona and has been called a “heartland hit” for families by Nick Jr. magazine. The vibrant capital city is a rare combination of thriving business, progressive government, rich culture and advanced education.

Surrounded by lakes, laced with bike trails, numerous parks and green spaces, the city offers countless opportunities for families to enjoy outdoor living. Cultural offerings include performances by the Madison Opera and Madison Symphony Orchestra, productions at Overture Center for the Arts—an architectural landmark that presents more than 200 performances, art exhibitions and educational and community events each year—and at the University of Wisconsin’s many venues. The university offers residents access to a shoreline campus, a 1200-acre Arboretum, a Geology Museum, the Elvehjem Museum of Art, and a 460,000 square foot arena for basketball and hockey at the Kohl Center.

The city boasts a wide range of live music venues, resident theatre groups and visual art centers, giving the city a reputation for urban sophistication that’s usually reserved for larger metro cities. Just last year, Madison came in second place in the “Top 100 Best Places to Raise a Family,” by Children’s Health.

Other notable accolades for Madison include:

  • Named “Best Place for Education” and “Best Place to Live in America” by Money Magazine.
  • One of the “Top 10 Best Green Large Cities” by Country Home.
  • One of the Top Ten Best Outdoor-Oriented Towns by Yahoo Real Estate.
  • The UW-Madison Campus rated among the nations’s best LGBT-friendly campuses in The Advocate College Guide for LGBT students.

Wisconsin: Permits single GLBT adoption. Does not clearly prohibit joint gay adoption. Second-parent adoption prohibited.
