Thousands Participate in Tel Aviv Gay Pride Parade
Friday, June11, 2010 4:00:11 PM

Israeli media has reported that approximately 100,000 people took part in Tel Aviv’s gay pride parade.

In addition to the thousands of civilians who turned out for the gay pride parade in Israel today, a number of politicians attended the event to show their support for the gay community in Israel.

Kadima party chair, Tzipi Livni, spoke to the crowd. “[Because] the tendencies of the body and heart were not political, the protection of the [gay] community is not situated within the realm of any one political group,” she said. Livini added that it is a “matter of human beings respecting the others.”

Last year’s Tel Aviv pride parade was met with violence. Two individuals were shot dead and 11 more injured.

Hundreds of police officers provided security at the parade this year, and there have been no reported instances of violence yet.

While same-sex marriage is not legal in Israel, the nation has recognized same-sex marriages performed in other countries since 2006.

This Tel Aviv pride parade comes shortly after Madrid announced that it will not let an Israeli delegation participate in its pride parade.

Organizers of the Madrid event said it would be “barbaric” to let a group participate in a march celebrating human rights when that group did not condemn its nation’s recent attack on the Gaza flotilla.
